Today we give a nod to Shirley Jackson, PhD, not to be confused with the Shirley Jackson of The Lottery fame, because without her we would not be having this tete a tete, since not only was she the first black woman to be awarded a Ph.D. from MIT, in 1973, while working at Bell Laboratories in 1970s and ’80s, she conducted breakthrough scientific research with subatomic particles that enabled others to invent the portable fax, touch-tone telephone, solar cells, fiber-optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting. Thanks, Shirley! #girlpower
