When this happened yesterday I was embarrassed but today I'm just angry. After I lost a significant amount of weight I noticed that men started treating me differently. No not differently: they were treating me the way I was accustomed to being treated in my youth when I was pretty and shapely. After I became sick and subsequently fat I became invisible, which to be honest was a welcome change from years of leers. But I had been ill for almost 2 decades, so at first I was delighted that men were opening doors for me again, this gesture that faded into the sunset when I became fat. But quite quickly I came to realize that these men who were now opening the doors were the same ones who ignored me only 6 months prior so my swollen ego quickly shrank back to normal and I viewed these actions for what they were for the most part. But yesterday just pissed me off. As I was leaving a facility I noticed an older gentleman standing near the door. As I approached the man, with much flourish he offered to open the door for me so I thanked him, to which he replied, "Let me get the other door too!" Flustered by the attention I again thanked him and he continued speaking as I made my way to my car. Not wanting to be rude I turned around and told him to have a nice day, and he smiled at me as his wife pushed her way through the two doors he so gallantly held for me. I was so embarrassed for her that I hurried my way into my car and avoided eye contact with the two standing on the sidewalk, but the longer I ruminate on this the more pissed I become. I don't care what is considered PC. In my world men still hold the door open for women, but if men are too lazy to do it for their own women, please don't bother doing it for someone else's. We don't want your random courtesies at the expense of your womenfolk's feelings. And here's an added thought: those courtesies you extend to strangers will go a much much further when they are practiced on your partner who will be grateful for your attention. #doors #holdingdoors #courtesy #gallant #gentlemen
