Mix it up

Curiously today's Food Porn is not about food but all about slaking that summer thirst without all the calories. We all know how boring water is especially when it's hard to quench that summer thirst. Obviously with the boom in creations of new flavored drinks and bottled water saturating the market, see what I did there, we clearly observe a market for it. But some of those drinks and waters are not only packed with sugar, they are host to up to 180 calories. You have 2 or 3 of those a day and you've now drunk as many calories as are in an entire meal! So you may think that by avoiding sodas or alcoholic beverages and instead drinking this stuff you are benefitting your diet when in fact you are torpedoing it. My favorite summer drink is homemade Meadow Mint Iced Tea but my second favorite is Lemonade, specifically Simply Lemonade, but at 120 calories for an 8 oz glass, it's something I don't pick up lightly. Still the lure is always too great and i must have it. This year however a lightbulb went off in my head as i sat watching a flavored water commercial. Hmmm... what if i made my own flavored water? So I did just that. At first I mixed a glass with 1/4 water and the product is so flavorful that I couldn't even notice a difference. The next time I tried a 1/2 water to lemonade ratio and it was still better than at Shell's the local iconic drive-in that I love much more than their lemonade. The third time I

mixed approximately 1/4-1/3 lemonade to water and it tasted pretty much like Shell's or any other lackluster lemonade, yet it was still very refreshing with less calories than most bottled drinks. This now places you at about 30 calories per serving, the benefit being that if you are on a diet you can drink 4x as much as if you drank it straight. And speaking of which, please read the labels before purchasing your bottled drinks. In addition to the high calories and high sugar content of a lot of those drinks, multiply that by 2 because most bottles hold 2 or more servings per bottle! You could be sabotaging your diet without even realizing it. Mixing your own flavored water has the added benefits saving you tons of money because at $1-2 dollars per bottle, those costs add up. At $2.50 for one bottle of Simply Lemonade, if only cut in half you'll get 14 8 oz servings versus paying a minimum of $14 for the same amount, but I get at least 2 dozen servings from 1 bottle. That's huge. Plus they have other refreshing drinks as well so you have flavor choices beyond lemonade. Finally mixing your own drinks not only saves your waistline, you are also doing your part to lessen ocean pollution because you are purchasing less plastic, making it a win-win for both you and our lovely sea creatures.
